SYMPOSIUM UPDATE:

We understand there is inclement weather predicted for the day of our event. However, we have decided to hold the event with the understanding that there may be those who cannot attend due to travel conditions. We ask and encourage that you please take your safety into consideration when making the decision to travel to UNH for the NEWCA Symposium. We would love to see you, but only if it does not jeopardize your safety.

Unfortunately, if you are unable to attend, we are unable to provide a refund for your registration fee, as catering costs have already been spent. We apologize for the inconvenience.

A brief bio on our guest, Neal Learner: Having grown up in suburban New Jersey, I was eager to leave home and start college. Unfortunately, the University of Pennsylvania and I did not see eye to eye, nor did my choice to be a math major quite work out. By the time I graduated from SUNY Purchase with a BA in English, I vowed never to set foot in a classroom again and went to work in Silicon Valley as a production manager for a four-person company making plug-in boards for the then brand-new personal computer. After several years of life in the matrix, I took a year off to write a novel, ran out of money and realized that if I pursued an MA, I could live off of student loans and spend more time writing. Over 30 years later, I find myself as former English Department chair, former writing center director, former writing program director, and former WAC director, all of those at Northeastern University, as well as previous stints at MIT and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Writing continues to sustain me though it’s primarily been academic writing since putting aside that last novel to pursue my doctorate in education. I do plan on returning to fiction writing in a few years, as well as riding my bicycle from Portland, OR, to Portland, ME.

NEWCA’s next official conference will be Spring 2027.
